Business Valuations

Valuations of closely-held businesses are performed for both litigation and non-litigation purposes and require considerable judgment and expertise.  An independent valuation expert relies upon education, professional training, sufficient experience and objectivity to the valuation process.  An objective valuation of a business can make a significant difference in overall success or failure of the transaction at hand, whether the business valuation is the subject of marital dissolution, a shareholder dispute, purchase or sale of a particular business, buy-sell agreements, creating phantom stock for a key employee or matters before the IRS (gift, death and estate planning).  Understanding the true value of a business can become the most significant issue in reaching a fair and equitable result to the parties involved in the process.  The appropriate valuation expert should demonstrate a thorough knowledge of accounting, economics, tax law, general business operations, forensics and the legal issues at issue.  Additionally, collaboration with real estate appraisers, equipment appraisers, investment professionals and others often become necessary to properly value the subject business.
